Cycling and Mountain Biking in the Costa Blanca - Tue 05th January 2010
Some people think the Costa Blanca just offers a sun, sand and sangria type of holiday. How wrong they are as there is so much more to the area, such a variety of activities and experiences with cycling being just one. There are many routes available to cyclists of all levels, north of Alicante between Alcoi and Denia. The roads are of good quality and there is a choice of coastal, hilly or even mountainous rides, with some roads going to 1,200 metres. There are flat routes to be found between Javea and Denia. Some areas have cycle paths on their main roads. With so much in the way of offroad trails leading through the mountains of the Costa Blanca, there is undoubtedly an abundance of mountain biking to be found. You can also hire bikes out there and hire shops can be found in most towns even the smaller ones like Javea and Moraira . The Costa Blanca, Sierra Espuña, and the Marina Alta mountains offer an excellent variety of both single track and wide forest trails and have long been used by professional riders such as seven times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and his US Postal Team as a training base. Opportunities abound inland for walkers, cyclists and mountain bikers as the mountainous terrain of the Costa Blanca are the perfect playground. Also it is a well know fact that the weather is much warmer in the Costa Blanca than other parts of Europe and that is the reason why many top professional teams use the area for their pre season training is. Here are few names from the present & recent past Miguel Indurain, Abraham Olano, Marco Pantani, Matt White, Alex Zulla, Johan Bruyneel, Paolo Bettini. Lance Armstrong & Alberto Contador (Astana) Oscar Freire (Rabobank), Alexander Kolobnev (Saxobank ) Tom Boonen (Quickstep). Pro rider Trent Lowe of Team Garmin has lived and trained here for the past three years. In Feb 09 Cycle Sport magazine asked Trent about his life on the Costa Blanca "Training is fantastic around here; it’s probably up there with the best places I have trained in around the world."
